why it is a good thing that adobe flash is becoming adobe animate cc

You probably already know by now that Adobe has decided to rebrand "Flash CC" as "Animate CC." This took pretty much everybody by surprise but heavy users, like myself, were hoping for a move just like this and I'll tell you why. But first, here's what I know so far about Adobe Animate CC:

adobe creative cloud

The most important point:

If you have the Creative Cloud desktop application, Animate CC will be listed in January 2016. Previous version of Flash Pro will continue to be available (just as they are now).

Basically, it is my belief that Adobe sees the "Flash is Dead" meme taking on a little more traction than they would like and are trying to distance themselves from the name so that the SWF version of the Flash brand can die on its own and the program itself (the thing that I've been using to make animation for many years and have rarely exported to SWF anyway) can live on. RIP Adobe Flash, long live Adobe Animate CC

I say this because from the features list it doesn't look like Adobe Animate CC is much more than a name change and a slightly more animation-focused upgrade to the existing Flash CC 2014 - and that's a good thing! I want "Flash" to keep updating and improving... I don't really care what they call it (aside from the fact that my book coming out in March was written with "Flash" in the title, but you let me worry about that... an exciting change might be in order!). Now to those updates I mentioned a moment ago...

Adobe Flash CC becomes Adobe Animate CC

Here are 8 welcomed animation-specific updates coming to "Adobe Animate CC"

  • We're getting a new brush to play with in the form of a vector art brush system. Like in Illustrator, You can make custom brushes and can modify the path of a stroke after its drawn... you can even ANIMATE the path of a brush stroke (so says the release video). If this means easier handwriting animation... that'll make explainer videos a bit easier, won't it
  • They're implementing a colored onion skinning system (like Toon Boom)
  • Adobe Stock is continuing its CC implementation across all program updates meaning you can browse its vector art library and pick one to drag and drop on the stage without ever leaving the program
  • They're focusing their video output to HTML5 and 4K video support... although they'll still support SWF and AIR (they're Adobe, afterall)
  • We're getting the bone-tool back! I mean, I only used it once but some people love it
  • You'll be able to rotate the canvas just like other drawing apps
  • Drop H.264 videos right onto your Timeline to use as a guide layer.
  • Updated Motion Editor gives you granular control over motion tween properties like color effects, transformations and many more

So all in all, the changes are definitely more focused on animation this time around as in years passed it seemed like most of the effort had been going to web design. I know that there are a lot of people already onto Toon Boom products and that's fine... but for heavy Flash users like myself this is a welcomed change! Any time a program as versatile as Flash has been it's going to have its fair share of bugs. I can't say for sure yet, but I believe that by focusing down to an animation-specific audience the build can get more stable and streamlined. There's a reason that Flash has been in the lead for so many years and its because that compared to other programs you can use for animation, it's not as daunting to pick up. And as you can see from the various TV shows, commercials, animated shorts, and even films (!)... it is powerful enough to let you create amazing things as you grow as an artist!

adobe headquarters

It's about the "Brand" and the "Focus"

Again, I believe that changing the name of Flash CC to Animate CC, is a branding decision... one to distance themselves from the name "Flash" which in Adobe's view might have become too toxic.

Really, whenever people talk about Flash who aren't in the animation industry they're usually talking about Flash players and SWFs in internet browsers... there's been reports on that type of playback being a resource hog and having security threats. But for us... for animators... Flash has been distant from that in our minds for a loooooong time now. It's a tool that lets us create the moving illustrations we have in our minds as a form of expression. If anything, it makes more sense to me to open a program called Animate in order to Animate, so why not change the name?

And yes, I actually have Toon Boom Animate... Pro 2 actually... and it's a fine program. But even Toon Boom decided that they were going to do away with that after only a couple iterations and pare back to the Harmony pipeline. I'm not questioning either company's decision here, just pointing out that this stuff happens all the time and what matters is "what's under the hood."

I'm going to get my hands on Adobe Animate CC as soon as I can and take it for a daily test drive and report back with first-hand knowledge, but as for right now... it looks like the only thing that's changing is the name. Long live Adobe Animate CC!

copyright and what animators need to know about it, fair use, parody, fan art and more, episode 103 rubberonion animation podcast

HOT COCOA SHOW! This week we talk all about Copyright, Fair Use, Parody, Fan Art and more in a discussion that's centered around a blog post I made on the topic a couple days ago (click here to check that would which ALSO has this episode embedded in it for good measure)! Creators on the internet mostly get the blame for using and sometimes abusing copyrighted material in their own creations. Sometimes they constitute something new and other times they're not at all covered under fair use and are basically just stealing, whether intentional or not. As pointed out early in the show, ignorance is not a defense against copyright infringement. However! "Internet creators" are not unique in this area, there's just a lot more artists sharing their work now than there used to be... and much of that work is the exploratory stuff nobody ever used to be privy to in the pre-internet age.

Because the copyright has been extended to such a degree that more of the art which is actually still relevant in our time is copyrighted (proportionate to in the past when the copyright term was much shorter), the risk of stepping into legal quicksand is actually even more probable now. More creators, being seen earlier in their careers than ever before, in a time of extended copyright on the pop culture that itself is uniquely used as a cultural reference point of expression... that's complicated!! I aim to make things clearer for you by making it clearer for my co-host Rob in this episode of the podcast and help further in the companion blog post which I encourage you to check out.

Elliot Cowan is the indie animator and filmmaker behind the new movie "The Stressful Adventures of Boxhead & Roundhead." We got to talk to him for 2 hours about everything from trends in big-budget animated films, the current state of art schools and the double-edged sword of making a feature-length animated film virtually by yourself. You listeners submitted so many great questions too and we get to all of them! You might be surprised what he thinks about the animation process and the Pixar movies Up and Cars. Listen for animation mumblecore, "thanks Rob, shutup," the grumpy animator theme song, how you pronounce Cowan and why it's that way, and indie animators as home brewers.

Interview is Indie Animator Elliot Cowan director of The Stressful Adventures of Boxhead and Roundhead RubberOnion Animation Podcast Episode 102

This week we saw Glen Keane (the master animator behind Ariel from "The Little Mermaid") draw in Virtual Reality, and then Batman et al beat up sea creatures (including Ariel) in the new Batmetal animated music video. We finally get to see what "Wabbit," Bugs Bunny's new series, will look like and learn about a Spongebob Squarepants musical and a possible Avengers-style teamup movie of your favorite 90s NickToons. These next two episodes are a little special, and not just because they precede our 100th episode LIVE show! With Stephen traveling this week, two episodes were recorded in one session. The split between them is a cliffhanger of epic proportions (I may be overselling that)! Enjoy and leave the evening of Sunday, September 27 open to join us for our 100th episode, LIVE!

This week Stephen and Rob tackle the question of "collaboration" and what that means for us animators. This topic seemed relevant since we're working on another Podcastimation for release at the end of the month in conjunction with our 100th episode. We cover some of the factors which go into finding someone to collaborate with, how to avoid some of the possible pitfalls like a difference in vision, and review examples of popular artistic collaborations. We want to know what you think... what makes for a truly effective collaboration? Have you ever been in one yourself? Share your comments, stories and suggestions in the comments section below and we'll read the best ones on next weeks' episode!

We're talking all Video Game related stories this week but start with a question: is "Animations" a word? Nintendo said they want more control over their movie properties, fan-film producer Adi Shankar (Judge Dredd: Superfiend, Power/Rangers) and Fred Seibert (Frederator) want to make a dark Castlevania animated mini-series, and Rovio cuts a third of their work force. This week we also play a game where Stephen reads out all the video game movies that have been made thus far and Rob and Pat try to guess what their Rotten Tomatoes rating is... I know this is cliche, but the answers may surprise you! The audience question this week is a great one about what animated series we would cancel in order to revive another.

It was an interesting week to be a kid. While "Sesame Street" moves to HBO, "The Lion Guard" is coming to the small screen in a beautifully animated new series and Stephen saw a family-friendly animated short collection in a local theater, featuring the works of nine animators from around the world. If you happen to be an "adult-kid," the red-band trailer for "Hell & Back" was posted and the Hollywood Antitrust lawsuit is back in play... OK, this week's theme is stretched a little bit but it did lead to some VERY interesting discussions! There was technical talk over "The Lion Guard" animation style, social discussion over "Sesame Street" on a premium cable channel, and a bit of budget talk regarding the recommended reading this week (see below).

This weekend was Disney's D23 presentation so we discuss all the information that came out of that... live-action remakes, sequels, and the incredible line-up on Disney and Pixar animation film slate all the way to 2018! Stephen starts the show by giving a mini-review on the British re-dub of the Argentinian animated film "Metagol" (which in the UK is called "Unbeatables"), Rob tells a story about having poop on his shoe and Pat breaks some news. Then we're off talking about how Furries love Zootopia, why Cars 2 might get too much hate, if Donald Trump was producing the upcoming Dia de los Muertos inspired Pixar movie "Coco" and the problem with trying to make the "definitive" version of a fairy tale. Enjoy the show!

We finally got to see what Chris Farley's SHREK would've been like in an early story reel which surfaced this week. His passing in 1997 was a big shock to us so there's a lot of discussion surrounding this topic this week. But that's not all because there's a "Bob the Builder" reboot with a new character design who looks... symmetrical, a new Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show coming to Netflix which is 2D (!) and the rights have been secured to make a Dungeons & Dragons movie. That last story also contains the skit this week is Stephen reading excerpts from Ice-T's description of his experience recording the D&D audio book (starting at 1:03:24)... so enjoy that! There are technical discussions as well surrounding the new Windows 10 and a blog post which tried (and failed) to properly compare the budgets of live-action VFX to that of fully CG Animated Films. The questions this week comes from a listener wondering if we're going to CTNx this year, which ticket we bought, and if that's right for her. This is another 2hr podcast so let us keep you entertained while you trudge through the middle of another work-week!

TMNT is getting a 2D animated special from Titmouse Inc, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" Disney XD series shows some serious action with its new trailer and Chinese animation shows it's on the rise in a big way with "Rock Dog." There were also two passings we mention this week: wrestler and actor "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and animation historian and reporter John Culhane. In other news, apparently there's a PEZ movie coming (PEZ like the candy not PES the animator... which would be fascinating and wanted). Also, Stephen is back from traveling and as such is in front of a nice sounding mic instead of the patchwork sounds of the tablet you heard for the last few weeks. While there weren't a lot of media type animation stories (except for The Good Dinosaur trailer which is covered), that didn't stop this episode from turning into one of the more interesting ones filled will discussions over the roll cartoons play in a child's development, the nature of copyright in the internet age, why the Surface Pro 4 is a sign that Microsoft is doing more for the creatives of today than Apple... oh and there's an Emoji movie being developed... which ALSO turned into an interesting discussion over public domain stories! We also field a question about if these two 2D (hand-drawn) animators would/will ever dabble in 3D (computer modeling). Enjoy the last week of "Stephen's traveling audio" because next week I'll be back in the office and I'll be crystal clear!

I'm also still on the road, so I've left Rob back in NY for a trip out to the IL where I am recording with Pat in his house... or as Rob like's to call it, "The Ryan's Den!" By request, here is a spoiler FREE review of Disney Pixar's INSIDE OUT!! We don't stop there though, there are things to say about the animated short "Lava" ahead of the movie as well as an open discussion about Pixar in general. This was a really great week for art and storytelling so I love episodes like this! There are some other topics covered (which you can see in the annotations below) as well as a Rapid Fire segment and a shoutout about some fan art done which you can see below!

I (Stephen) am back in NY on my new Wacom Companion 2 and it actually handled the recording and editing rather well! Rob and I talk 3 trailers, 2 series announcements, 3 audience questions and many more stories in our Rapid Fire segment! Of the trailers, "Peanuts" absolutely blew us away (retroactive spoiler alert). I also take the beginning of the podcast to talk about the Wacom Companion 2 and Adobe Flash CC 2015. You can check out the images under the annotations for a quick look at a weird bug I encountered and the symptom solution in Windows 8.1.

This week we have a special interview with animator Robb Pratt ("Superman Classic," "Flash Gordon Classic"). We talked about how and why he started the Classic series, his thoughts on Superman as a character, Flash Gordon and how he relates to Star Wars, various trials and tribulations navigating the business world of animation entertainment, his recent work on "Wabbit" (the Bugs Bunny animated shorts show) and his absolute love of story and art! Robb was very generous with his time and couldn't have been more fun to talk to. In particular, I loved his insights into the character relation between Bugs Bunny and Superman, the analysis of the Rancor pit scene from "Return of the Jedi" and how he got that creepy voice effect in "Bizarro Classic." Check out his YOUTUBE CHANNEL, WEBSITE and TWITTER for all things Robb Pratt!

An animated bomb called "Klaus" was dropped on the community this week screaming that hand-drawn animation can visually compete with CG in today's climate. And then the creator, Sergio Pablos, says that he'll talk about the techniques used to create the short trailer at an Annecy talk. That's about as close to a mic-drop as we get in the animation field... so we talk about it... a lot! Other stories include Pixar's "The Good Dinosaur" teaser, Mega Man getting a TV show, Disney adapting another animation into live-action and a bunch more actually (which is why this episode is almost 2.5hrs long)! Also, I drop an announcement this week about the special episode we have coming NEXT week so be sure to listen for that and send me all your questions via this blog post comment section and/or the #RubberOnionPodcast tag on Twitter and Facebook. With Stephen and Rob taking on this episode alone with only their wits to guide them, stumble they do into a discussion about how and when to charge for your animated content thanks to a Vanity Fair interview of Don Hertzfeldt. We also field a question at the end about whether a listener should go into Freelance, move to a different city for a salary job or both. So here's what happened this week. The "Disney reuses animation" video mashup went around again and people got really negative. Harry Shearer's future with The Simpsons is in question and people got really bitter. The Simpsons released a couch gag featuring Rick & Morty and people called for an early termination for The Simpsons like it was worthless. Then Rob and I get on a call to discuss what happened during the week and I lose my mind a bit. Enjoy.

I recorded this episode with Rob today... about 3 hours ago. There's basically no editing on this episode and that's why the title is "You Get What You Get." You, the listener, saved this episode because I had SO MUCH to pull from! About half of the topics this week are pop culture related and half are specifically animation. "What is a Creative?" That's the theme of this week's podcast where Stephen and Rob are flying solo (duo?) on another 'hot cocoa show.' Check out the outline below with timestamps if you want to skip to a particular topic. We talk about why our career (animation) and creative careers in general are a bit different and sometimes hard to relate to by those that aren't in this type of field, what type of pressures we're under and how we cope with them, and the all important topic of wrestling work and personal projects at the same time. What is the deeeallll with objective and subjective criteria?? Drinking game to NOT do... sip whenever I say objective or subjective. Yea, don't do that. My hope for this week's episode is that we articulate why being in a creative field is so weird and seemingly incomprehensible to even those close to us and why that may not matter (and that's a good thing). I kept this episode clean so if you want to send this to someone who you feel doesn't understand you, wants to, and you don't have the words or time to try explaining it... feel free! And let us know what you think about this topic in the comments section below. How do you understand your career? How do you deal with the unique pressures it presents?

There aren't many main stories this week because of the high likelyhood of fakery (April Fools was a few days before this recording). But what we DO have was completely submitted by you listeners so thanks for the help! Disney is making another live-action movie off one of their animation properties, Adam West and Burt Ward are Batman and Robin again, there was a music video directed by Sylvain Chomet, and the main conversation is about the difference between a "job" and a "career," prompted by Will Finn's blog post. The PIXELS trailer was the most popular conversation topic on the RubberOnion facebook page this week, so we lead with that. At the end we discuss the internet as a creative spawning ground and how traditional media fits in AS WELL AS addressing a question to me (Stephen) about being a freelance animator. We also talk about the ATTACK ON TITAN live-action teaser, INCREDIBLES 2 plot, and the announcements of a California Raisins movie as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt starring in and producing a Fraggle Rock film. Also Rob went to an underwear party in Williamsburg (which, as a sentence, isn't that weird because it ends with "in Williamsburg"). Stephen and Rob are back again to talk about the creepy "Thunderbirds" character designs, the Oscar nominations AND those left out in the cold. Stephen and Rob try to work through what happened at Charlie Hebdo last week in Paris, but also discuss less heavy topics like the Peanuts animation style and Wacom's new 27 inch Cintiq. Join a very sick Stephen and a very uncomfortable Rob for over 2 hours of chatter... because if you're looking for real information you might have come to the wrong podcast.
